ZIMBABWE – HARARE – The late Vice President Joseph Msika was the only stumbling block left in Mugabe’s dream of becoming the “Kamuzu Banda” of Zimbabwe it has emerged.
Top sources that spoke about the late Vice President told The Zimbabwe Telegraph that Msika in 2007 blocked Mugabe’s plan of becoming the life leader of Zanu PF in a politburo meeting.
“Msika was a non nonsense guy. Three years ago he single handedly led a move that derailed Mugabe from being automatically declared the Zanu PF life President,” said a Zanu PF politician.
One political historian who spoke on condition of anonymity said that Msika is one guy who never gave in to Mugabe’s system of patronage. Largely owing to 1963 when he was made to sit in a meeting meant to pass a vote of no confidence on Joshua Nkomo. Msika reportedly walked out of that meeting. Ever since then his loyalty for Nkomo had never been questioned.
“Msika declared his position on Mugabe when he refused to be part of a plan to get rid of Nkomo in the 1963. Msika is one man who was for the revival of Zapu. Never at any one given time did he publicly castigate the tear away from Zanu PF. When the split in the movement came in July 1963, Msika was in Dar-es-Salaam with other members of the ZAPU executive. When the Rev. Ndabaningi Sithole, Moton Malianga, Robert Mugabe and Leopold Takawira proposed a resolution deposing Nkomo from the leadership, Msika walked out of the meeting,” said a political analyst.
As Msika lost his health fight Mugabe re-ignited his ambition and so far most provinces have endorsed his leadership dream. With Msika out of the picture Mugabe might just become the “Kamuzu Banda” of Zanu PF and possibly Zimbabwe.
