ZIMBABWE – HARARE – THE Zanu-PF Youth League has endorsed party’s national chairman John Landa Nkomo as the late Vice President Joseph Msika’s successor. The Zimbabwe Telegraph reports.
A high-powered delegation of the Youth League from seven of the country’s 10 provinces met Nkomo on Saturday in Bulawayo and assured him of their support.
Zanu-PF Deputy Political Commissar Richard Ndlovu also attended the meeting.
Zanu-PF Bulawayo Youth League’s Secretary for Administration Bernard Nhata, said the party’s youth affairs wanted Nkomo to take over as Vice-President.
The youth affairs leaders were drawn from Manicaland, Matabeleland South, Bulawayo, Harare, Mashonaland Central, Midlands and Masvingo.
Matabeleland North sent an apology while there was no communication from Mashonaland West and East.
“We met Nkomo as provincial leadership of the Youth League from seven provinces and we assured him that he has our support,” said Nhata.
He said the youths were rallying behind Nkomo as they considered the pivotal role he played towards the development of the country and his seniority in the party – the united Zanu-PF.
This meeting went ahead while Zanu PF politburo member Kembo Mohadi on Thursday urged his party members interested in the post of Vice-President to desist from campaigning through the media, saying there is a laid procedure to be followed.
Mohadi said the party had a mandate to assign people to a position adding that it was not proper to use the media to canvass for support.
“It is clearly unethical for members to campaign for positions using the media because it is only the party that has the mandate to assign people,” said Mohadi.
“The Zanu-PF politburo, which is the party’s highest decision making body is yet to meet over the issue (of Vice Presidency) and we will resolve it and therefore I don’t think it is prudent for some members or individuals to go around canvassing for positions in that manner.”
The post of the party’s Vice Presidency fell vacant following the death of Cde Joseph Msika in August.
