ZIMBABWE – HARARE – ZANU-PF National Chairman John Nkomo has urged party members to submit nominations for the Vice-President’s post as a way of following procedures instead of holding “talk shows” in provinces.

Nkomo said provinces should submit names of the candidates they wish to see in the VP’s position as instructed by the Politburo.

“Provinces should submit names of those they wish to take over as VP. The party has clear procedures how the selection is done. We have to follow the laid down rules and processes,” he said.

Early this month, the Politburo gave Matabeleland provinces up to 14 October to nominate a candidate to succeed the Vice-President Joseph Msika.

Zanu-PF Secretary for Administration Didymus Mutasa has already said Matabeleland provinces had not yet submitted the nominations.

However, Nkomo said the VP’s issue was likely to be discussed at the Politburo meeting slated for next week since the matter was outstanding from the last Politburo meeting, which had recommended Matabeleland provinces to choose a candidate.

Nkomo, a member of the party’s Presidium chairs the Politburo, conferences and congresses as the chairman of the party.

Nkomo’s advice to provinces, youth and other party wings to forward their nominations comes against a background of jostling for the VP’s post in the past month.

Deputy President of the Senate Naison Khutshwekhaya Ndlovu, Bulawayo Resident Minister Cde Cain Mathema and former Zipra Chief of Staff Retired Brigadier-General Ambrose Mutinhiri have expressed interests in assuming the VP’s position.

Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to South Africa Simon Khaya Moyo has been touted by freedom fighters in Bulawayo as a potential candidate for the VP’s office.
